What is the NBA Summer League and how does it work?

The NBA Summer League is an annual summer event organized by the National Basketball Association (NBA) that provides an opportunity for young players to showcase their skills and for teams to evaluate emerging talent. The tournament takes place every year in the summer, usually in July or August, after the conclusion of the NBA regular season and playoffs.

The NBA Summer League is a 14-day tournament featuring all 30 NBA franchises, forming teams composed of young players selected in the most recent draft, up-and-coming players, and some players with development contracts from the G League (the NBA’s development league). The tournament showcases players who have played three years or less in the NBA, in addition to new draft talents. The games are played in three different cities: Las Vegas, Sacramento, and Salt Lake City.

The NBA Summer League spans across two weeks in the month of July, and is held at multiple different locations. Sacramento and Salt Lake City will host six games each across a span of three days. After the short stint in those two cities, teams head on over to Nevada, as the remainder of summer league is held in Las Vegas.

The Summer League games are not like regulation NBA games, which are 48 minutes long, games only last 40 minutes (same as in FIBA/WNBA), plus multiple 5-minute overtime periods (first overtime is played in its entirety; true sudden death thereafter).

The NBA Summer League is a pre-season tournament following the draft where all NBA franchises assemble teams composed of rookies, undrafted, and young players. The tournament’s purpose is to give the new players a chance to showcase their talents to fans and team staff while working with coaches to start developing their game.

Players who take part in the summer league are usually those not considered to be 100% ready for the NBA, that is rookies, undrafted players, and third or second-year players who did not get much playing time the previous seasons, and many G-League players. The Summer league can be the gateway to the actual league, and so often players playing overseas come to it to impress NBA executives and coaches, and get their spot in an NBA roster.
